Supporting Our Sector: A Deep Dive into the Electrical Industries Charity
In the latest episode of The Perfect Contact Podcast, Peter sat down with Kate Adamczyk from the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) to discuss the vital lifeline they provide to our industry.

As the charity celebrates its 120th anniversary in 2025, the conversation highlighted a mission that has evolved from simple benevolence to a comprehensive support system for mental health, financial distress, and legal aid.

A Legacy of Support
Founded in 1905 by ten industry members who each contributed £10, the EIC was born out of a recognised need for sector-specific support. Today, that mission is more critical than ever. Kate, who joined the charity three years ago after nearly a decade as a marketing manager at Rexel, noted that the organisation’s evolution now focuses heavily on "mental health support, prevention, training, education, and breaking down stigma within the industry".

Who is Eligible?
One of the most significant talking points was the clarification of who can access these services. There is often a misconception that support is limited to electricians or those paying a fee.

●      Broad Eligibility: Support is available to anyone in the electrical or energy industry, including warehouse staff, drivers, contractors, sales, and administration.

●      Retirees: The charity continues to support those who have retired from the sector.

●      No Cost: Services are "entirely free and confidential," with no membership fees required.

●      Rapid Response: Counselling can be arranged within 48 hours when necessary, with every individual assigned a dedicated case manager.

Breaking the Stigma
The electrical industry remains male-dominated and high-pressure, which often leads to a "persistent stigma around mental health". Kate highlighted that many workers—particularly lone workers or those in field sales—can go long periods without meaningful social interaction, exacerbating feelings of isolation.

To combat this, the EIC partners with organisations like Andy’s Man Club and Lighthouse Construction Charity to encourage men to talk and to provide suicide prevention resources.

"Even if a referral comes from an employer, nothing discussed with the case manager is shared with the employer," Kate emphasised, noting that confidentiality is the cornerstone of their outreach.

Empowering the Next Generation
The EIC has seen a surge in younger people seeking help, prompting the launch of free online mental health training specifically for apprentices. These bite-sized, mobile-friendly courses tackle real-world issues such as:

●      Banter vs. Bullying.

●      Financial strain and low pay.

●      Housing instability and homelessness.

●      Relationship breakdowns and addiction.

The charity is also developing a college rollout plan to reach these workers at the very start of their careers.

How to Get Involved: Fundraising and Awareness
The EIC receives no membership income and relies entirely on fundraising. For their 120th year, they aim to raise an additional £120,000 through diverse activities ranging from bake sales to the high-profile Powerball on Park Lane.

Greenbrook’s Commitment:

As part of our ongoing partnership, Greenbrook is exploring several initiatives to bolster the charity’s reach:

●      QR Codes: Adding EIC contact codes to Greenbrook products and literature.

●      Internal Awareness: Rolling out the charity's digital packs to our warehouse and customer service teams.

●      Challenges: Signing up for the Snowdon by Night fundraising challenge next year.

Looking Ahead
The industry is changing, with growth in renewables, EV infrastructure, and data centres. While AI is unlikely to replace the hands-on skills of our trades, the mental and financial pressures on workers remain high. The EIC is committed to remaining relevant as the industry evolves, ensuring that as we move toward net zero, no worker is left behind.

Need Support? If you or a colleague are struggling with mental health, financial distress, or legal issues, the Electrical Industries Charity is here to help. Their service is 100% confidential and free.
