Accelerating Electrification: Why Being "At the Table" with BEAMA Matters for the Electrical Industry
In a rapidly evolving electrical landscape, the quest for safety, sustainability, and technical excellence has never been more critical. Nick Hayler of BEAMA recently joined Peter on the Perfect Contact podcast to discuss how the UK’s leading trade association is steering the industry toward a safer, net-zero future.

What is BEAMA?
BEAMA is the UK trade association for energy infrastructure and systems, representing over 200 members across four key sectors:

●      Building Electrical Systems: Infrastructure, circuit protection, and cable management.

●      Energy Network Infrastructure: Transmission and distribution.

●      Electrical Transport Systems: EV charging for fleets and domestic use.

●      Low Carbon Building Solutions: Heat pumps, smart metering, and consumer energy data.

As Nick puts it, “Everything’s electrical,” and BEAMA provides an end-to-end voice for these technologies.

The Core Value: Technical Committees and Safety
One of BEAMA’s most vital roles is the development and maintenance of product standards through dedicated technical committees. These committees influence UK wiring regulations, European standards, and international policy.

“Everybody has the same voice. Doesn't matter if you're a micro, an SME or a global corporate, everybody in BEAMA has the same voice.” — Nick Hayler

The "Price of Safety" Challenge
A recurring theme in the discussion was the dangerous trend of prioritising low costs over product integrity. Nick and Peter discussed the "obsession" with driving prices down, even for life-saving equipment.

Peter shared a story of a customer haggling over the price of an RCBO (a life-saving device) while simultaneously spending more on a coffee and a muffin. Nick noted that people often scrimp on the consumer unit, which he describes as the “beating heart of the home” and “crucial to the safety of that building”.

Policing the Market: Surveillance and Non-Compliance
BEAMA doesn't just set standards; they actively police them through the Market Surveillance Support Initiative Group. This group identifies non-conforming products—often found on online marketplaces—and works with the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) to have them removed.

Nick highlighted a recent case where a non-compliant consumer unit was purchased from Amazon, tested by members in independent labs, and subsequently removed from the market.

The Road to Net Zero 2050
With the hashtag #acceleratingelectrification, BEAMA is helping manufacturers reach their 2050 targets. This involves focusing on:

●      Embodied Carbon: Measuring the carbon footprint of the products themselves.

●      Scope 1-4 Emissions: Managing factory and supply chain emissions.

●      BEAMA 2050 Connected: A service now expanded to non-members, including wholesalers and contractors, to provide guidance on reaching net-zero targets.

Digital Transformation: The Digital Product Passport
The future of product data lies in the Digital Product Passport. This system will likely utilise QR codes on products to provide instant access to:

●      Sustainability and carbon data (linking to EPDs).

●      Installation instructions and electrical parameters.

●      Manufacturer origin and serial numbers.

A Three-Year Vision: The "Level Playing Field"
When asked what he wants to achieve in the next three years, Nick emphasised three key pillars:

Tighter Legislation: Ensuring improved product safety and a “level playing field” for all manufacturers.
Digital Product Passports: Tying together data and sustainability in a simple, accessible format.
Unified Embodied Carbon Measurement: Establishing one methodology so that contractors and specifiers can compare products “apples for apples”.
